Bonzo's in the Press ( again ! )

The Sunday Times [may 25, 2008]

The band get  special mention in Robert Sandall's look at 'comedy music'.

" As the decade wore on, and pop started to take itself more seriously, along came the funniest band of the lot, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. A surreally attired ensemble led by Viv Stanshall, a foppish fellow with big glasses, they mercilessly teased rock’s earnestness with songs such as Can a Blue Man Sing the Whites? - and so hip were they in their day, Paul McCartney, no less, co-produced their hit single I’m the Urban Spaceman."

Sunday July 2nd

The Bonzo's appeared today on BBC's Sunday AM programme. Over 1.5m viewers watched the band perform Jolity Farm to Andrew Marr and his guests; Tessa Jowell, William Haig, Cathy Lett and Chris Patten. In the breakfast that followed, the band did offer William Haig a speaking part in the upcoming UK tour. Sadly (?) he declined!

The appearance was organised with Barney Jones, Editor of Sunday AM and a life long Bonzo's fan. Barney commented "the Bonzo's made such a contrast to the rather serious politicians we normally have on the show, it was a delight that they could join us."

Over 175,000 people tuned in to BBC4 on Friday 2nd May to watch a one hour special of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band 40th Anniversary concert which was performed on the 28th January 2006.

The Times - Critics Choice [Friday 2 June 2006]
The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band (BBC4, 10pm)

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of My Brother Makes the Noises for the Talkies, the first ever record by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. This concert, recorded at the start of the year, was held to celebrate their achievements. Many of the original band members appear, but sorely lack the dearly departed Vivian Stanshall. Step forward Bonzo Fanatics Stephen Fry, Adrian Edmondson, Phill Jupitus and Paul Merton, tickled pink to be chosen as stand-ins.

The Dada inspired lunacy of the Bonzo's has never been equalled and the immortal classics such as Jollity Farm, My Pink Half Of The Drainpipe and the Urban Spaceman are still cherished by connoisseurs of original and humourous music everywhere.

On January 29th 2006 the Astoria Theatre in London hosted a very special evening featuring the original Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band plus special guests Adrian Edmondson, Stephen Fry, Phill Jupitus and Paul Merton. Naturally this amazing event sold out instantly and e-bay tickets were soon changing hands for hundreds of pounds to eager bidders. The DVD recorded that evening has gone on to become a best seller hailed as the “finest assembly of British musical and comedy talent since the Secret Policeman’s Ball”.

In November of this year the show hits the road when the original band featuring founder members Neil Innes, Roger Ruskin Spear, Rodney Slater, Sam Spoons, Vernon Dudley Bohay Nowell, Bob Kerr and "Legs" Larry Smith set off on an extensive UK theatre tour. The part of the late, and much lamented, Vivian Stanshall will be performed by surprise celebrity guests from the world of music and comedy. From previous experience early booking is essential. This is a unique slice of Britsh pop history where Python, The Beatles, vaudeville and surrealism collide head on; and who knows?...you may finally get to see Eric Clapton on Ukele!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRODUCER

We always knew the Bonzo's had to be done well if we were going to do it we have to do it justice that means there are no corners to be cut. Any band can go and tour the clubs but the Bonzo's legacy is held in such reverence by so many people we knew we would have to do something very special. On an average night there are fifteen performers on stage plus the lights, film projections and of course, robots, explosions, musical saws, electric spoons and a unique array of devices from Theramin Legs to the Rowmonium

We have been thrilled and delighted by the huge response from to-day’s comedy performers and the constantly shifting array of celebrity special guest stars are certain to delight audiences as we move round the country. This time round there’s no fixed line up making each concert a unique experience. This is one tour in which each show is guaranteed to be different.
